Hypnotherapy for Confidence in Essex
Being true to yourself, maintaining your own individuality, is vital in preserving a person’s mental wellbeing. For me personally, I can vouch for that. Growing up in the east end of London, I was peer pressured into being the stereotypical east end cockney geezer.
When at school, I couldn’t show any form of academic leanings, as it was deemed as being soft and out of sync with the local mindset. Where I grew up, the only form of prosperity was working in factories, building sites, driving a licenced black cab in London, or turning to crime.
Anyone, who had any leanings towards none of the above, were branded as being a bit ‘poncey’ and stepping beyond their self-imposed cages. I remember at school coming top in a few exams, and the amount of stick I got in the form of banter, was immense. I was made to feel inferior because I was using my mind! As a result of that, I didn’t take school seriously at all, and ultimately paid the price.
Then, as a young adult, it was going out and meeting people I had no connection with at all. Yes, I did suffer as a result of ‘trying to belong’. I always felt like an outsider in that environment I grew up in. I couldn’t get my head around petty crime and being violent. I didn’t want to sit in pubs talking to blokes about crime, and violence all night. Or meeting the local woman who wanted me to be a violent, criminal thug (because that was who they wanted to be with).
The psychological impact being around the ‘cockney geezers’ and ‘plastic gangster’s moles’ made me become withdrawn and not wanting to mix with people. When meeting new people beyond the parameters of that environment, I assumed that they would be the same as what I had left behind (because that was all I knew). Clearly, that was totally wrong. Over time, I realised that the world wasn’t like the one I grew up in the east end of London. Not everyone had that limited mindset.
When anyone has to live a life where they feel as if they’re suffocating in the environment they find themselves in, it is vital to try and be yourself. If a person is stuck in a place where they feel totally alienated, there are two obvious choices. One is to carry on being around the same people, in an environment that makes you feel ill at ease. The second option is to have the courage to just walk away and find other people who can make you feel fulfilled and alive as a person.
On the website welldoing.org, there’s a blog all about the importance of being an individual, titled ‘The Importance of Being Yourself’. In the blog it presents some ideas about being authentic and honest in relationships with those around us:
‘Imagine putting all of the energy we use in pretending into cultivating ourselves and creating something better of our being. Imagine dropping our pretence to build honest and healthy relationships. So how do we stop pretending?
- Don’t imitate. Everyone is different and so, to copy another’s way of life simply means to suppress who you really are. Create your own path and enjoy walking it.
- Speak the truth. Be honest with yourself and with those you come in contact. When we lie, we out ourselves in constant anxiety because each lie must be covered up by another lie, and so on and so forth.. Being honest is the best way to be at peace with you and with others.
- Find peace in being alone. It is better to be alone and confident in who you are, than to be in the company of others by lying out of fear. Only once you have overridden the fear of being alone, will you be able to let go of the need for social approval. This will allow you to build genuine relationships.
- Do what you love. No matter what others expect from you, try not to compromise your way of life. Whatever you enjoy doing, keep on doing it. ‘

When a person is young, they feel that they have to belong, and don’t want to be left out. That’s quite normal and natural. No one, no matter what age they are, wants to feel left out. But, if it comes at a price, that can make that person struggle as they get older to feel connected to anyone.
Life is about being true to yourself, enjoying what you do, and having a healthy mindset. If, however, a person finds themselves in a group that constantly puts them down, for trying to become a better version of themselves, or can’t relate to their meanness of spirit, that creates resentment, bitterness and anger within that person. It will also impact on their self-confidence too.
Being an individual doesn’t mean that a person has to become a recluse. It will mean having the courage to let certain people go who longer add any real positivity to your life.
