It is important to have an awareness of our own values in life. Our values show us what is important. They can be looked on as living a life with the right principles. A person who lives their lives according to the correct values for them, is a person who’s experiencing a life that makes them feel fulfilled.

The above paragraph sounds great, doesn’t it? However, there a lot of people out there who have no idea about their own values. For those who are in that position, they are going through life possibly feeling unfulfilled.

Values can give an individual ideals into how to live their lives. With clarity in this area, a person could possibly be experiencing feelings of contentment, peace, and being focused. In addition, an individual can make the right changes that could be beneficial for them.

If a person is not living a values-based life, it can evolve into that individual becoming anxious. If a person is not living their life according to how they really feel it should be led, the sub-conscious mind will let that person know through their emotions.

Think about it, living life not adhering to your own true set of principles, just getting on with things, will always draw the attention of your real self. That real self will be yearning to become a main part of their character, but it’s being blocked. It’s like being around people you have no connection with, but put on a fake personality to just fit in. That can generate anxiety.

Clearly, there needs to be some guidance on how a person can discover their own values. There are a multitude of approaches to find out an individual’s personal values. Here’s one way of looking into those values, according to self-development author, Brian Tracy:

  1. Decide what you stand for.
  2. Write out your key values.
  3. Select five key values.
  4. Action exercises.

So, what do you stand for? Do you have virtues? Do you hold them in high regard? What do you stand for? What don’t you stand for? What would you sacrifice for? Let’s give an example here and answer those four questions.

  1. What do you stand for? Decency, respect, peace, etc.
  2. Write out your key values: Industriousness, freedom, security, loyalty, connection, creativity, love, success, change, wisdom, individuality, compassion, etc.
  3. Select five key values from your list: Freedom, creativity, success, love, wisdom.
  4. Action exercises: Reflect on how those values are a part of your life today. What do you need to do to make those values become a part of your life? Organise those top five values and put them in numerical order from one to five, to discover which is your most important value. Live your life according to those top five values, putting more enthesis on the numerical order. For a list of values, go to: https://soulsalt.com/list-of-values-and-beliefs/

Scroll down the page, and you’ll see a list of 102 examples (which should be enough to be getting on with!). Choose around twenty values from the list and then narrow it down to ten, then down to five, and then select from one to five your most important values. Once an individual has an awareness of their top five values, it’s vital for them to make sure that those values will be an important part of their lives. Obviously, over time, a review of those values will be needed due to our changing self-perceptions, and also life changes too.
